Local HistoryAbout half of the land in the area was bought by speculators, and as late as 1840, there were only three resident property owners, Clark S. Cusick, Joseph H. Dutton and Joshua Tompkins. The village was founded in 1866 when the Grand Trunk Railroad came through and opened a station here. John C. Johnstone became its first postmaster on November 7, 1870. Named for John Goodell. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
