Local History

John LaRue, from Chicago, took up residence here in 1848.  He was joined by John E. fisher and John Dorsey about 1854.  The village was named by Mrs. Fisher who, observing a dense mass of wild grapes entwined in the tree tops, said it was a glen arbor created by nature, and the name stood and still stands.  It had a hollow-tree post office before being given an official one by the federal government on July 6, 1857.
