Local HistoryThe village was first platted in 1875 and named Cedar from its location on the Cedar River, but there was another Cedar. It took the name of the county which had been named in 1831 for Major Henry Gladwin, British Commander at Detroit, here in Pontiac's Rebellion. Incorporated as a village in 1885 and as a city in 1893. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
