Community Organizations Local HistoryThe Mohawk Mining Company, organized in 1898, had a stamping mill here on the Lake Superior shore. Barnett Shearer, superintendent of the firm, became the first postmaster on August 11, 1904, with the office still operating though the village is now a hamlet. Named for Joseph E. Gay, long identified with copper mining in the area. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
