State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryFrom the fertility of the soil the township was named Garden, the adjoining bay Garden Bay, and the village which followed, Garden. Philomen Thompson, the first settler, built his cabin here in 1850. Most of the early settlers were of French origin. The settlement was also known as Haley's Bay, or as Garden Bay.
