Local HistoryFounded in 1835 by George L. Gale who named it Morton, believed to have been given in honor of John Morton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1837, a citizen's committee voted to change the name in honor of founder, George L. Gale. Incorporated as a village in 1861 and as a city in 1931.
