Local HistoryA Post Office named Jay, for Jefferson Jagruth, its first postmaster in 1856, located in the settlement of Loretta. George Truesdale was chiefly responsible for having the office moved here to the settlement of Tittabawassee. The tavern here was run by "Mammy Freeland" and the lumberjacks and river men who frequented it named the village Freeland. The Post Office changed the name from Jay to Freeland in 1879. In 1944 U.S. Army Nurse Aleda E. Lutz of Freeland
Michigan was the first U.S. military woman to die in a combat zone during World
War II when her hospital plane went down on her 196th rescue mission.
