Local History

The first white settler here, John Greenwood, came in 1855.  George M. Cartwright recorded the first plat in 1866 as Frankfort City, and it was given a post office as South Frankfort on April 10, 1872,.  The name Frankfort was applied to the general harbor area.  Later, the present city of Frankfort occupied the north half, while Elberta occupied the south half.  Incorporated as the village of South Frankfort in 1894.  On June 1, 1911, the name was changed to that of the locally popular and plentiful Elberta peach.
