Local History

About 1795, the French made a settlement here on the Riviere aux Ecorces (Bark Creek:  the Indians procured birch bark along its banks to make their wigwams and canoes).  It post office was opened on October 29, 1827.  The village was first platted and recorded as Grandport in 1836.  Incorporated as the village of Ecorse in 1903 and as a city in 1941.  Some early maps and records spell it Ecorce.
