Local HistoryThis village on the Chicago & Northwestern (now Pere Marquette) Railroad was first settled about 1859 and from 1867, almost exclusively by Hollanders. Storekeeper Warner C. Semple became the first postmaster on February 24, 1874, the office operating until December 30, 1965. Named from its being east of the village of Saugatuck. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
