Local HistoryD. Robert Burcham became the first settler here in 1849. Here inn 1855, the world's first agricultural college was founded and named Michigan Agricultural College (renamed Michigan State College in 1925 and Michigan State University in 1955). Reverend Robert G. Baird, secretary of the college, became the first postmaster, with the post office named Agricultural College on June 30, 18884. The community which grew up around the college was known as Collegeville, and its plat was so recorded in 1887. On August 26, 1907, college and community were renamed East Lansing, it being located east of Lansing. Incorporated as a city in 1907.
