Community Organizations Local HistoryThe Keweenaw Copper Company obtained several leases in 1843, including the land later laid out by the Phoenix Company and sold as lots, which began the village. Named, the same as the river which divides it, from the many eagles then in the area. It was in Houghton County until Keweenaw was organized in 1861 and is now the county seat.
