On the Courthouse Square in beautiful downtown Charlotte, towers (273 feet) the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse. The Courthouse Square Association is proud to be in the process of preserving the history of Eaton County not only through the preservation of the 1885 Courthouse, but also through museum exhibits and programs. The Eaton County Courthouse, built in 1885, is constructed in the Renaissance Revival style. On July 4, 1894, exactly 11 years to the day the cornerstone was laid, there was a devastating fire. Within a year the courthouse was rebuilt, almost exactly to the original specifications. Today, the beautiful woodwork, tile floors, and stained glass ceiling are a testament to both architectural design and craftsmanship of the period. The Courthouse Square, comprised of the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse and the 1873 Sheriff's Residence, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
