Local History

Governor Stevens T. Mason named Douglass Houghton state geologist and the references in his reports on 1840 to copper deposits in the county stimulated a rush of prospectors.  In 1843, Copper Harbor was named headquarters of a special government agent, Walter Cunningham, for permits to locate copper mines.  Daniel D. Brockway built the first log structure here, a hotel called Brockway House, in 1846, and on May 4, 1860, he became the first postmaster.
