Community Organizations State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryGovernor Stevens T. Mason named Douglass Houghton state geologist and the references in his reports on 1840 to copper deposits in the county stimulated a rush of prospectors. In 1843, Copper Harbor was named headquarters of a special government agent, Walter Cunningham, for permits to locate copper mines. Daniel D. Brockway built the first log structure here, a hotel called Brockway House, in 1846, and on May 4, 1860, he became the first postmaster.
