Heritage through our Ancestors Local HistoryIts settlement followed the cutting through of the Fort Gratiot turnpike in 1832. Its first settlers included Peter Kilroy, James Mallory, George Bathey and Benjamin Weeks. The township was organized in 1837 and named for Christopher Columbus.
