Local HistoryIn 1830, Linus Jacob, a squatter from New York State built the first home within the present town, a cedar-pole shanty. In 1832, Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill. The Clark brothers, Jeremiah, Nelson W., and Milton H., platted and named the village in 1840. The Independence post office was transferred to and renamed Clarkston on December 12, 1840.
