State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryA swamp area when Julius Thorson, of Munising, bought the land here in 1838. He built a factory to make gift articles, and with the holiday trade in mind, he named the place Christmas. A fire in June 1940 wiped out the place and ended the endeavor, but the area still retains the name. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
