Local HistoryFounded in 1887 by John Chassell, a French farmer. First named Pike's Bay and later, Robinson for Orrin Robinson, manager of the Sturgeon River Lumber Company and later lieutenant governor of Michigan. Given a station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1888. William Johnson became the first postmaster of Chassell, named after its founder, on February 2, 1888.
