Local HistoryLorenzo Conklin became the first settler in 1862. This settlement, first called Grendale, by clerical error appeared in the act as Green Dell. Charles Joiner located here in 1869 and built a sawmill, a broom handle factory and a shingle mill. Given a post office as Chase, with Alvin Joiner as its first postmaster on March 29, 1872. This village on the Marquette River served as the county seat until 1874. Named by homesteader John Bigbee for Salmon Portland Chase, Governor of Ohio.
