Local History

A colony of fishermen by 1852.  John S. Dixon bought land here in 1854 and in 1864 had a large dock built.  In 1878, resort associations began to plan and settle the site, leading to its incorporation as a village, with Mr. Dixon as president, in 1879, and as a city in 1905.

In the early days it was also known as Pine River, its permanent name honors the Jesuit missionary, Pierre F. X. Charlevoix.
