State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryThe village was named from its proximity to the Champion Mine which opened in 1867. John R. Case became the first postmaster on December 29, 1869. A station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad. The mine was closed in 1910, but the village and its post office remain.
