Local HistoryStephen B. Davis became its first postmaster on April 26, 1869. James M. Wadsworth (son of Abram S. Wadsworth, founder of Elk Rapids) opened the first store here in 1872. The village was platted in 1883. The Chicago & Western Michigan (now Pere Marquette) Railroad came through in 1892. Incorporated as a village in 1895. The lake on which it was located was then called Intermediate or Central Lake, being in the center of a chain of lakes from Ellsworth to Bellaire.
