Charity
Island Light
Caseville
Just
a short cruise, if you own or charter your own boat, from Caseville to Big Charity Island, just one hour to get to
this vacation paradise. The island was named by the lake mariners for its
location, placed "through the charity of God" midway between the city
of Au Gres and the Thumb, at the entrance to Saginaw
Bay. The waking trails are marked (and rare flora and fauna identified) and the
picnic area has tables, grills and a pavilion. Spend the day and make believe
it's your own private island or lighthouse. The light was constructed in 1857,
and then replaced by the Gravelly Shoal Light and abandoned in 1939.

Local History
Ruben Dodge, a hunter
and trapper from Maine, settled here with his family in 1836. It first
became known as the Pigeon River. It was renamed Port Elizabeth or
Elizabethtown for the wife of William Rattle who represented the interests here
of large landowner Leonard Case.
It was renamed
Caseville in 1856 when Francis Crawford bought 20,000 acres in and around the
village from Mr. Case. Mr. Crawford became the first postmaster on January
28, 1863. Incorporated as a village in 1896.
