Carson City

Located in Montcalm County

Heritage through our Ancestors

Proctor, Alonzo Joel (A.J.)

Local History

Its land was first entered in part by Joseph Throop in 1850, platted on land owned by R. M. Abbott, Delia Miner and Hiram T. Sherman in 1866 and recorded in 1871.  The first lot was sold to Thomas Scott and his two nephews, John and Thomas LaDue who, under the firm name of Scott & LaDue, built a sawmill in 1868 and a grist mill in 1870.  The North Shade post office in Gratiot County was transferred here on August 3, 1868, with Hiram T. Sherman becoming the first postmaster of Carson City, named by Mr. Scott who had been in Carson City, Nevada, in its boom days.  Incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1960.

Excerpt from the City Charter "The Nevada town, founded in 1858, was named for Christopher ('Kit') Carson, western U. S. frontiersman (1809-1868)"
