Local HistoryThe first settler was Andrew Watson in 1837. The town came into being in 1844 with the separation of Cannon from Plainwell Township. Named for LeGrand Cannon, a New York financier who, through his agent, E. B. Bostwick, bought land here, had the village platted in 1848 and gave away 25 fine lots. Mr. Bostwick applied for a post office in 1844 and it was given on May 7, 1844 with the spelling as Cannonsburgh. Its spelling was changed to Cannonsburg on February 5, 1894.
