Local HistoryBeginning as a civil township in 1866, the village developed around the mines of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company and was then composed mainly of the officers and employees. Gradually it composed of the surrounding communities of Laurium, Hecla and South Hecla, and in 1929, united with the incorporated village of Red Jacket under the name of Calumet. A calumet was the clay stone bowl of the Indian peace pipe. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
