Local History

Settler, Charles Cowles, came here from Vermont in 1833, followed by John Hatfield and Russell McCoy in 1834.  It was first called McCoy's Creek.  Incorporated as a village in 1858 and as a city in 1929.  Named for U.S. Senator (later President) James Buchanan.
