Heritage through our Ancestors Local HistoryThis settlement was known as Plummer's Pier before Charlotteville was founded by a lumbering company in 1859 and named for Charlotte Howe, wife of one of the owners. In 1870, another owner, George C. Bridgman, platted a village a half mile east, on the railroad where a station was opened that year, and both the station and the village were named Bridgman. Incorporated as a village in 1927 and as a city in 1949. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
