Local HistoryThe John Pike family settled here in 1829. George Kimmel, who also came here in 1829, bought out Mr. Pike but did not settle here with his family until 1831. First called Wolf's Prairie as it had been the village of an Indian Chief named Wolf. Named for President Andrew Jackson's attorney general John M. Berrien. Because of the many springs in the area, merchant R. E. Ward got it renamed Berrien Springs on April 18, 1836. It became the county seat in 1837. Incorporated as a village by the supervisors in 1863 and by the legislature in 1867. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
