Local HistoryThree New Yorkers, Samuel Nichols, Israel Parsons and Benjamin L. Powers, made the first government land purchases here in 1835, and Mr. Nichols became the first actual settlers. When organized in 1838, with Lemuel Castle as its first supervisor, the township was named after Bennington, Vermont, where some of the early settlers had come. Its village was given a railroad depot and on December 13, 1848, a post office. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
