Bell Oak

Located in Ingham County

Local History

First settled by James L. Nichols in 1842, but the actual village was due to George Fisher, jr., who, with his brother-in-law, Truman Spencer, built a sawmill here about 1855.  The bell in the solid oak school gave it the name Bell Oak School, and the village took the name Bell Oak.  The names Bell Oak and Locke, many settlers came here from Locke Township, N.Y., were used interchangeably for years, but now it is Bell Oak.
