The Celebration took place in 2006 in Bay City's extensive park system
spanning both banks of the Saginaw River. To compliment ship
tours, guests enjoyed a number of free, hands-on activities
and full schedule of special events and live performances
including a Folk Music Festival, Professional Storytellers, live
theater performances, a French Voyageur Reenactment camp with
demonstrations, a Craft Show, a Fine Art Show, roaming clowns
featuring balloon art, tours of the Historical Museum's new
Maritime Gallery, and other activities.
Bay City is proud to be the only
official host port in Michigan for the American Sail Training
Association's Tall Ships fleet. Magnificent Tall Ships will line
up on either side of the Saginaw River in Downtown Bay City for
the largest gathering of Tall Ships in the State this summer. |

brick light tower attached to the corner of the dwelling. The tower is
fifty-five feet high to the parapet and an additional twelve feet high to the
top of the ten-sided cast iron lantern which no longer displays a light. A
raised wooden walkway encircling the dwelling was replaced in 1919 with a
reinforced concrete walkway five feet wide.

Local History
Bay County's first permanent settler was
Leon Tromble who built a trading post at the mouth of the Saginaw River in
1835. Mr. Tromble claimed that he would not trade his horst for the entire
area, even though he stayed their for the rest of his life.
Detroit lumberman James Fraser bought 240
acres in 1836 and platted the village of Lower Saginaw. The first Post
Office in 1846 was named Hampton after its township, then renamed Lower
Saginaw. Citizens objected to to the word "Lower" and in 1856
the name was changed to Bay City.
Incorporated as a village in 1859 and as
a city in 1865. Bay City was an important railroad center an an early date
and the manufacture of railroad equipment was a major industry in 1877.
That year the Michigan Pipe Company and the Bousfield & Co. Woodenware Factory
were the largest of their type in the world. Beginning in the 1850's, the
shipbuilding industry grew steadily during the second half of the century.
In the 1880's there were 32 lumber mills along the river. When the
lumbermen left, coal mining, fishing, shipbuilding and the production of beet
sugar provided the basis for Bay City's growth.
