Local History

Two Indians and two members of John Mullett's surveying party fought it out on the banks of a river here in 1824 and Mr. Mullett dubbed the stream Battle Creak.

J.J. Garnsey made the first government land purchase here in 1831.  He transferred his claim to Phineas P. Sackett and Ezekiel B. Garnsey.  In 1832, Samuel Convis who had an interest in the Garnsey purchase, built the first house.  D.G. Garnsey became the first postmaster in May of 1832, with the office named Garnsey, but changed to Battle Creek on May 8, 1834.

Surveyed by General Ezra Convis in 1835 and platted by Samuel D. Moore in 1836.  Incorporated as a village in 1850 and as a city in 1859.
