Local HistoryThomas T. Bates was secretary of the Traverse City Railroad Company when organized in 1870. Because he was believed to have got the road through here in 1891, the village and its post office were named for him. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
