Local HistoryThe site of the main branch of the Potts Lumbering company and the Loud Lumbering Company. It was first called Mud Lake, from its location on Mud Lake and was given a post office of that name on March 10, 1887. In 1912, two surveyors staying at the home of Frank Barton, a settler here laid out the town around the lake (on paper), sold lots, and named it for him. The post office took the new name on February 29 of the same year. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
