Local HistoryCaptain Charles Pease, the first settler homesteaded here in 1871. The settlement was given a post office named Barkville on November 30, 1877. With the coming through of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1882, the village was moved to the north side of the track and renamed Bark River.
