State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryRevered Frederic Baraga opened the Holy Name mission for the Indians here in 1843. Around it the town grew and was given a post office named Bristol on June 29, 1869. The office was renamed Baraga on May 11, 1870. It was in Houghton County until Baraga was organized in 1875.
