Local History

John Allen, of Virginia, and (Elisha) Walker Rumsey, of New York, became the first settlers here in 1823.  The area abounded in natural groves or arbors, and they named it for their wives, Ann Allen and Ann Rumsey.

Platted and recorded as Ann Arbor on May 25, 1824.  John Allen became its first postmaster on December 8, 1824.  Incorporated as a village in 1833 and as a city in 1851.
