John E. Hoskins

Grosse Pointe, Michigan

Identifying left to right in the picture:  Bill R. Hyden, John E. Hoskins, Theodore Hornbaker.

Picture compliments of Bill R. Hyden

One of my closest friends during WWII was John E. Hoskins.  I knew he had become the director of Goodwill Industries of  Greater Detroit.  I also knew that he died in the 1970s.

I contacted Goodwill Industries of Detroit and was advised that they had no record of a John E. Hoskins.  I then leaned on the Detroit Public Library for assistance and Janet Nelson, Librarian, was very helpful.  I have learned that John was, indeed, Executive Director of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and Goodwill Regional Director of Michigan and Western Ontario.  This from a Grosse Pointe News article featuring Dr. John Hoskins; most likely in the 1970s.  John died May 11, 1977.  His widow, Joyce M. Hoskins, died October 21, 1978.

My particular current interest is that I have two pictures of John taken in 1944-45.  I feel that his children would like to have copies of these.  One of them I took when John and I were in Salzburg, Austria after the war ended...and the other, herewith attached,  is of  my tent mates and I at Poix, France in early 1945...prior to OPERATION VARSITY, the airborne Rhine crossing of March 24, 1945.  John was one of my tent mates.

John and Joyce were survived by three children:  Dean W., Mrs. Deborah Watson and Karianne M. Hoskins, according to the newspaper obituaries I have received, dated May 14 and 19, 1977.

The photocopied page includes the article in the Grosse Pointe News, which also has a picture of Dr. John Hoskins.  If that picture is still in GPN files, I would like to get a print copy.

Our WWII unit, the 62nd Troop Carrier Squadron, still exists, now as the 62nd Airlift Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base.  We have held an annual reunion there in recent years with the current members of the Squadron.  I will be there, at the Best Western Inn in Jacksonville, Arkansas on December 3, 4, 5.

I realize that this has been a lengthy explanation and request but if you can assist in any way we will appreciate it.

Sincerely,

    Bill R. Hyden
