Elisha Ely

Allegan, Michigan

Picture compliments of Marcia Ihrig Fotopoulos

I am an ancestor of Elisha Ely. I would love to know more about him. I am also an  ancestor of the Monteith family many of whom are buried in AlleganInformation compliments of Marcia Ihrig Fotopoulos.

Monteith Station, located in Allegan County was named for the Monteith family, Thomas, Sr., and Jr., William and Walter, who bought land and settled in the area in 1836-37.  It was the crossing point of the Grand Rapids & Indiana, and the Allegan & Southeastern Railroads, but it never became a village.  John James Neelley became its first postmaster on October 9, 1871, the office operating until March 15, 1907.  It was, unlike the town simply named Monteith.  Information from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D. submitted by J. Donelow-Stover.
