Local HistoryStorekeeper Patrick H. McDonald became the first postmaster here on the Cheboygan River, in Grant Township, on June 21, 1877, with the office name Sova for A. E. Sova, a local merchant and later also the postmaster. On December 7, 1900, the village was renamed to honor the patron of the parish, St. Francis of assist, who while praying at Mount Alverno, received the stigmata.
