Local HistoryThe village began with a rural post office named Laird on August 16, 1887, of which Patrick Maloney was the first postmaster. The office was closed on October 26, 1888, but was restored with Thomas H. Scott as postmaster, on November 12, 1888. when lumberman J. V. Alston became the postmaster on April 16, 1902, the village and its post office were renamed for him, the office operating until June 30, 1957.
