Alma

Located in Gratiot County

Heritage through our Ancestors

Herron, Dr. George and Mary, Family

Local History

First settled in 1853 by General Ralph Ely and three companions.  He built a sawmill here in 1855 and platted the village as Elyton in 1856.  Later an addition was platted by Mr. Gargett and called Alma, the name by which the whole community came to be known and the name, it is believed, of his daughter.  General Ely became the first postmaster of Alma on July 7, 1858.  Incorporated as a village in 1872 and as a city in 1905.
