Located in Keweenaw County

 

Local History

Founded by the Allouez Mining Company (named for Claude Jean Allouez, early French Jesuit missionary in the area) when they opened a copper mine nearby in 1859.  a station on the Hancock and Calumet Railroad.  Alex P. Thomas became its first postmaster on October 16, 1873.
