Local HistoryThe first land entry in the area was made by Jedehiah Jessup, of Monroe county, NY on September 12, 1835. The first actual settlers were Luther Stiles and Ludovico Robbins. The former, in partnership with Morris Crater, built a sawmill here in the winter of 1836-37. James T. Bailey became its first postmaster on July 19, 1845, the office operating until January 14, 1905. The townspeople had sent in the name of Carlton, but for some unexplained reason the legislature named it Algansee. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
