Local HistoryIn 1868, F. J. Lewis built a store here in Helena Township, naming the settlement which formed around it Noble. Located at the mouth of Spencer Creek, named for John B. Spencer who operated in the area, the village took the name Spencer Creek and was given a post office of that name on June 15, 1869, with Peter S. Smalley as its first postmaster. After the Pere Marquette Railroad came through in 1891, it was renamed for William Alden Smith, an official of the railroad, and the post office was renamed Alden on July 18, 1892.
