Local HistoryThis village on the Thornapple River, in Caledonia Township, began with the erection of a sawmill here by William H. Brown in 1848. Theodore Nelson became the first postmaster of Brownville on December 13, 1855, changed to North Brownville on December 18, 1855 and to Alaska on December 4, 1868, until the office was closed on February 9, 1906. The 1867 American purchase of Alaska from Russia most likely influenced its renaming. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D. Cemetery Listings - For Sale
