Local HistoryThe first alabaster rock (gypsum) was bored here in 1841 and the site was known as Alabaster before Alabaster Township was formed in 1866, and thousands of tons of the rock had been shipped from here before that. The first settler in the village was Benjamin F. Smith, Jr., in 1863, and he became its first postmaster on March 14, 1864, the office operating until August 17, 1962.
