Local HistoryPatrick O'Connor opened the first lumber camp here in Ellis Township in 1887 and it was given a post office named Ellisville on April 22, 1905, with storekeeper Fred Bartholomew as its first postmaster. Mr. MacPherson asked that it be renamed Afton, for the thought that the Pigeon River, flowing nearby resembled the Afton in Scotland, and its post office was so renamed on February 12, 1906.
