Local HistoryRix Robinson (1792-1875), from Massachusetts, built his trading post near here in 1821 and made the first land purchase in 1833; township and town were named for Ada Smith, daughter of Sidney Smith, who became the first postmaster on Jan. 5,1837; Lucius B. Lyon was called the founder of the village; the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad came through in 1853 and made it a station; G. A. Dalrymple and H. F. Dunn recorded their plat of the village on Sept. 4, 1857. A bronze tablet erected here by the county refers to Rix Robinson as the Founder of Western Michigan.
